Instructor : Willi Kurniawan

I fell in love with Aikido in Bandung, Indonesia in 1995. I studied with Tom Moore Sensei (a student of Gaku Homma Sensei) while attending Minnesota State University in Mankato for 3 years. After that, I studied with Patrick Riley Sensei at University of Minnesota Aikido club in Minneapolis, MN for about 7 years. I moved to the Black Hills in 2015 and started an independent club in 2016 and teaching Aikido mainly through Black Hills Community Education. In 2019, I joined Aikido Shimbokukai organization. Since then, I have been learning a lot from Lisa Tomoleoni Shihan.

I started my martial arts journey in high school, when I took a Taekwondo class with a friend. I found aikido practice while attending college in Southern California, and studied for 3 years with Winston Ou Sensei, whose foundations were through the Aikido Kokikai group at University of Chicago. I returned home to South Dakota after graduating and by fortunate coincidence found Rapid City Aikido Club and Willi Kurniawan Sensei, with whom I have studied for the past several years. I love the relaxation, focus, awareness, and fun of aikido.
